Curriculum planning
Our educationally harnessed play programme builds on the United Kingdom’s Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) curriculum, which sets expectations for each age and stage of a child’s developmental progress. At Malvern College Pre-School Hong Kong, we cover seven interconnected EYFS Areas of Learning and Development including Literacy, Communication and Language, Mathematics, Physical, Personal, Social and Emotional, Understanding the World and Expressive Arts and Design. All seven areas are designed to nurture children’s curiosity and enthusiasm for learning, whilst fostering and forming relationships in order to thrive socially and emotionally.

Forest-Beach School Programme - Malvern College Pre-School Hong Kong is one of Hong Kong’s first to operate a Forest-Beach-School Programme and it is run by qualified Forest School “Level 3” practitioners. It is a child-led learning programme focusing on giving children the opportunity to learn in and from nature: Children extend their education beyond the confines of the classroom walls!
Learning / Teaching approach and activities
At Malvern College Pre-School Hong Kong, young children develop and learn through both a structured and free play programme that focuses on inquiry, developmental and hands-on learning. Emphasis is placed on active, play-based learning with a balance of child-initiated and adult-led activities, which research has proven develops skills, knowledge, concepts and confidence that is not possible in a more formal classroom setting.

Assessment of children’s learning experiences
These include: Each pupil from Pre-Nursery and up has a digital Learning Journal-Portfolio linked to the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) developmental outcomes. We use ‘Tapestry’ as the educational software to present this information; All Pre-School children receive a Progress Report (mid-year) and an End of Year Report. The information within the Report will be supplemented by the rich data collected within the digital Learning Journal-Portfolio; Observations help to give an informed picture of each child and are carried out during play, themed work, and structured task work that is set and observed; Parent-Teacher Conferences (PTC) are held formally twice a year after the Pre-School Report has been distributed.
